The Strange Worm I Found on the Pavement
It was an ordinary morning. I stepped outside to get some fresh air when something unusual on the pavement caught my eye.
At first, I thought I was looking at a long worm dragging a piece of grass behind it. Nothing particularly remarkable—until I took a closer look.
The creature had a strange, flattened body with several dark stripes running along its length. But what really caught my attention was its head.
Instead of the familiar rounded shape of an earthworm, its head was broad and flattened, almost like a tiny hammer. It was such an unusual feature that I immediately realised this wasn’t an ordinary garden worm.
A Very Unusual Worm
What I had discovered was a hammerhead flatworm, also known as a hammerhead worm.
These fascinating terrestrial flatworms belong to a group called Bipalium. Several species are easily recognised by their distinctive broad, crescent-shaped or hammer-like heads. Their long, slimy bodies and dark longitudinal stripes can make them look surprisingly similar to unusually shaped earthworms when viewed from a distance.
But there is an important difference: hammerhead flatworms are predators.
Rather than feeding like ordinary earthworms, they actively hunt other small creatures living in the soil, including earthworms and other invertebrates. Some species are also known to produce tetrodotoxin, a potent toxin, which is another reason not to handle an unidentified specimen with bare hands.
If you ever come across one and need to move it, using gloves or another suitable barrier is a sensible precaution.
It Wasn’t Grass After All
The most surprising part of my discovery was the thing I had initially mistaken for a piece of grass.
It wasn’t something the creature was dragging behind it. It was actually part of the animal itself.
That bizarre, flattened, hammer-shaped head is one of the most recognisable features of these unusual flatworms. What had initially looked like an ordinary worm on the pavement turned out to be a fascinating little predator with a very distinctive appearance.
It’s amazing how something so easy to overlook can turn into an unexpected wildlife discovery—especially when you take a moment to stop, look closer, and investigate.
