Passenger Trapped in Plane Bathroom for Entire Flight Receives Handwritten Note From Flight Attendant

Think being stuck in a middle seat is bad? One airline passenger’s experience has redefined what a nightmare flight really looks like.

Online debates about airplane etiquette are nothing new. From cramped seating to disruptive passengers, travelers are quick to share their frustrations. But a recent incident has overshadowed nearly every flying complaint imaginable.

On Tuesday, January 16, a SpiceJet flight turned into a harrowing ordeal when a passenger became trapped inside the aircraft’s bathroom for nearly the entire journey.

A Routine Trip Turns Terrifying

The incident occurred aboard SpiceJet Flight SG-268, which departed Mumbai at 2:00 a.m. local time en route to Bengaluru, according to reports from The Indian Express.

Shortly after the seatbelt sign illuminated, a passenger seated in 14D got up to use the restroom. What should have been a brief visit quickly escalated into a frightening situation when the lavatory door jammed—leaving him locked inside the small space.

Despite repeated attempts by the flight crew and assistance from fellow passengers, the door would not open.

Trapped as the Plane Began to Land

SpiceJet later confirmed the incident in a statement, saying, “A passenger unfortunately got stuck inside the lavatory for about an hour.” The situation persisted even as the aircraft began its descent into Kempegowda International Airport.

With the passenger panicking and no way to free him midair, flight attendants tried to reassure him in an unusual way—by slipping a handwritten note under the bathroom door.

The note read:

“Sir we tried our best to open the door, however, we could not. Do not panic.
We are landing in a few minutes, so please close the commode lid and sit on it and secure yourself. As soon as the main door is open, an engineer will come. Do not panic.”

The message quickly spread online, drawing widespread attention and disbelief.

Rescue After Landing

Once the plane landed, two engineers boarded immediately and were able to break open the jammed door. The passenger was finally freed and received medical attention to help him recover from the traumatic experience.

Airline Responds

SpiceJet issued a public apology following the incident.

“SpiceJet regrets and apologizes for the inconvenience caused to the passenger,” the airline said in an official statement. As compensation, the carrier offered the passenger a full refund for the flight.

A Flight No One Will Forget

While airline mishaps are far from rare, being trapped in a plane bathroom during landing is an experience few could imagine. The incident has since sparked renewed discussions about aircraft maintenance, passenger safety, and confirmation that—sometimes—things really can get worse than the middle seat.
