While the majority of artists prefer their medium to be paint or clay, Vermont sculptor and stonemason Chris prefers to work granite, wood, marble, and other stone. Chris Miller makes extremely realistic stone sculptures of vintage trucks and cars, and they appear to seamlessly blend into their surroundings.

Chris began carving and sculpting in 1976, and is mostly self-taught. “For reasons I don’t understand, I have always needed to make things. If not carving, it’s building a house, a sturdy stone wall, furniture, or some random structure. It’s just always been important for me to be creating something. And, the more challenging the better,” Chris explains.

His inspiration behind the project is the stone VW beetle built in a field close to Ithaca New York in 1976 by a class of college art students. From seeing the VW beetle built of stone, Chris dreamed up his own art project and set to work designing and raising funds.

The vintage stone truck was part of a crowd-sourced community sculpture installation. It even boasts a beautiful flower bed in the “bed” of the truck.

All in all the vintage truck project is said to have used 8 loads of quarry stone, 2 pallets of bluestone, a marble tailgate, some big chunks of granite and real car tyres. The construction of the truck took five weeks to complete and weighs in at about 40 thousand pounds (18 ton). It still sits on a roadside in Maple Corner and has attracted visitors from all over.

What is so lovely about this project is Chris put a stone plaque in the rear window with names of donors and supporters that helped finance his piece.

It is safe to say Chris is an extremely talented man, as this is not his only art piece! He also does figurative and monument work. We can’t wait to see what he gets up to in the future!
