The Mysterious Glow Coming From the Wall
At first, the strange orange glow coming from the wall seemed like it could have been a reflection or some harmless electrical indicator.
But when the glow remained visible, the homeowner became concerned.
Rather than taking the outlet apart, they switched off the circuit at the breaker panel and called an electrician. That decision turned out to be extremely important—because the orange light wasn’t supposed to be there at all.
What Was Causing the Glow?
Once the outlet was safely removed, the electrician discovered a loose electrical connection behind it.
The poor connection had increased electrical resistance, creating enough heat to damage the insulation around one of the wires. The orange glow that had been visible through the small gap around the wall plate was actually coming from inside the electrical box, where the wiring was overheating.
What initially looked like a strange curiosity was actually a serious warning sign.
Fortunately, It Was Caught in Time
Thankfully, the problem was discovered before the surrounding materials caught fire.
The damaged wiring was removed, the faulty connection and outlet were replaced, and the electrician inspected the rest of the circuit for any additional signs of heat damage.
Once the repairs were completed, the mysterious orange glow disappeared completely.
Never Ignore an Unusual Outlet
An electrical outlet shouldn’t normally glow unless it has a purpose-built indicator light.
Unexpected light, heat, discoloration, buzzing, sparking, or a burning smell around an outlet can all be warning signs of an electrical fault.
If you notice anything unusual, don’t try to investigate by removing the outlet yourself. Stop using it and, if it can be done safely, switch off the appropriate circuit breaker. Then have a qualified electrician inspect the problem.
What looks like a small, harmless glow could be an early warning of something much more dangerous.
